When 8-year-old Julian, who copes with Cerebral Palsy, puts out a call for help at the clinic he attends for physical therapy and treatment, his doctor, Lee Janus, gets an idea to form a support group with other patients so he won't feel so isolated and alone. Alex, age 14, is brought in as well as Conroy, aged 20, who had so far progressed he's essentially been released, but is asked to stay on to moderate the group meetings.
From here, the book depicts the day-to-day individual lives of the three young men and some interesting characters evolve: Julian's divorced parents, the very attentive Jack and the bitterly apathetic Diane; Alex's parents, aspiring musician Tommy and his cautiously optimistic wife, Gina; and Julian's school friend A.C., who acts as a sort of bodyguard at school. and former Janus patient, Leah, herself recovering from C.P., becomes a romantic interest for Conroy.
The book is written in such a way that shows you these very relatable peoples' lives and circumstances as opposed to a stilted narrative. You'll feel as if you're on the paths with them and you'll see parts of yourselves in these people. You'll pick and choose your favorite characters and cheer them on.
